Restorative Re-Entry: Helping Students Transition Back to School After suspension

By Dr. Amber Hill March 17, 2026

When a student returns to school after suspension, they often face isolation, judgment, and academic gaps, which frequently leads to repeat behavior. A restorative re-entry circle is a structured process to welcome the student back, repair relationships, and establish a plan for success.

Designing the Circle

The re-entry circle should include the student, their parents or caregivers, a school administrator, and affected staff. The focus is not on re-hashing the mistake, but on identifying supportive resources and steps to restore trust and community inclusion.
